Synopsis[]
The shadow of Frank Stone looms over Cedar Hills, a town forever altered by his violent past. As a group of young friends are about to discover, Stone's blood-soaked legacy cuts deep, leaving scars across families, generations, and the very fabric of reality itself.
Plot[]
In 1963, the small town of Cedar Hills is terrorized by serial killer Frank Stone. Assigned to investigate the recent disappearance of a child, young officer Sam Green arrives at the closed Cedar Steel Mill, where he is accompanied by night watchman Tom Holt. Exploring the mill grounds, the duo soon find a grate leading to the furnace, and Sam decides to go alone, sending Tom to contact the police and report their find. Once in the furnace, Sam finds the baby when he is suddenly attacked by Frank Stone. Despite his best efforts, he is overpowered by the killer and is left with serious injuries. As Frank tries to throw the baby into the fire, Sam grabs his gun and shoots him, possibly saving the baby, before losing consciousness. Frank falls into the furnace and is impaled on sharp debris when his body is enveloped in a black mist with an unknown entity looming over him.
In 2024, Madison Rivera-Platt, who recently lost her mother, receives an invitation to a meeting at Gerant Manor. On the road, she picks up a hitchhiker who introduces herself as Linda Castle and that she has also been invited to Gerant Manor. Arriving at their destination, the women find the mansion empty, meeting only one person, Bruno Stanford III, who reveals himself to be another invited guest. Soon, the mistress of the estate and initiator of the meeting, Augustine Lieber, shows up. It is revealed that she invited Madison, Linda, and Stan because they each possess a piece of filmstrip of the original version of Murder Mill, a movie that Linda made with her friends in 1980 and is now considered a cursed and lost media. The trio give up their pieces to Augustine, after which she retires to her reliquary on urgent matters, once again leaving the guests alone.
In 1980, young Linda, along with Chris Gordon and Jaime Rivera, are filming Murder Mill at the abandoned Cedar Steel Mill when they are kicked out by Sam, now the sheriff. The crew is upset as they not only fail to complete the movie, but they accidentally break the camera during a confrontation with Sam. While discussing the mill and mentioning Frank Stone, Chris eagers to go back and finish the movie, adding the killer's story to it. After asking Bonnie, Jaime's older sister, for money, the crew heads to town to fix the camera. However, they fail to do so at the drugstore, leading them to the newly opened curiosity shop, where the storekeeper convinces them to buy a new camera instead.
In 2024, Linda, Madison and Stan, waiting for Augustine, decide to explore the manor. Linda learns that Stan won his filmstrip in a gambling game while Madison found her filmstrip among her mother's belongings. It is revealed that her mother is Bonnie, who passed away unexpectedly a few months ago, and Madison is still grieving her death. The trio soon notice someone sneaking outside the gate, which they decide to report to Augustine, but don't find her in the reliquary. Instead, the guests are confronted by the intruder, who turns out to be Sam Green.
In 1980, Linda, Chris and Jaime, accompanied by Robert, Sam's son, sneak into the mill, bypassing the police. The crew finishes the movie and having enough free time, decides to shoot an extra scene. They then are surprised by Bonnie, who has secretly followed them, and the group reluctantly takes her with them. The crew successfully shoots the scene, though it unintentionally reflects the situation in the Rivera family, causing the siblings to fight. Attempting to defuse the situation, Linda takes Bonnie outside while Chris, Jaime and Robert stay behind to check the machine shop for more footage. There they are shocked to discover Frank's secret lair, undiscovered by the police, and Robert leaves for his father. Waiting for him, Chris unknowingly uses the camera to awake Frank Stone's essence and revive him as a poltergeist. Chris is then pulled into an opened portal, while Jaime is possibly killed trying to save her.
In 2024, Sam confronts Linda, Madison and Stan about the filmstip, revealing that it serves as a prison for some ancient being and its pieces cannot be reunited. Stan leaves after fighting with Sam and Madison, following him, stumbles upon a horologium and a sarcophagus with a person inside. Thinking it's Stan, Madison tries to disable the horologium, possibly dying in the process. The person in the sarcophagus is revealed to be Chris from 1980, who then has the choice to go back in the past or stay in the present, which could result in Chris' or Stan's death respectively. Meanwhile, Linda and Sam, looking for the others, find Augustine's archive full of multiple alternate versions of Murder Mill. Moreover, Linda confronts Sam and deduces that he is not the Sam Green she knows.
